Summer break is a time to relax and enjoy the time away from school lessons. However, it’s also a time when much of the skills learned throughout the school year are lost. One of these skills is writing. We provide a list of writing prompts to share with students this summer break. These prompts will challenge and encourage students to keep up with their writing skills while also enjoying their time off.
Summer Writing Prompts
1. Write a letter at the start of summer break detailing what you’re hoping for yourself.
2. Write a letter at the end of summer break detailing what happened. Compare this with your first letter.
3. Write about the past school year. What went well? What would you like to continue for the next year? What didn’t go well? What would you like to change for the next year?
4. Write a persuasive essay convincing your parents to go on a specific vacation of your choosing.
5. Write a descriptive essay about your favorite nature spot. It can be a park, your backyard, a campground, or somewhere else. Visit the spot and pay attention to what you see, hear or smell.
Descriptive Essay Prompts
- Describe your favorite kind of ice cream.
- What is your favorite time of year?
- Describe your dream home.
- Use words to paint a picture of a place you remember clearly.
Narrative Essay Prompts
- Write about the best birthday you ever had.
- If I were an astronaut.
- Tell about a day in your life when everything seemed to be going wrong.
- Retell the event of the funniest thing that ever happened to you.
- Write an essay telling what would happen if you found a flying carpet.
Informative Essay Prompts
- Write about the insects in Australia.
- Explain why a chosen invention has been especially helpful to people.
Persuasive Essay Prompts
- Write about why you believe there should be a three-day school week.
- Should your family move to a new city?
- Teachers should assign at least 2 hours of homework for each student every day.
- All violent TV shows should be canceled.
- Tell why someone in your family deserves a $25,000 award for their hard work.
