October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The 2025 theme is: Secure Our World. The focus of this year’s theme is to encourage others to adopt simple and practical actions in order to strengthen their digital security. You can do this in many ways, including:
- Use strong passwords.
- Use multi-factor authentication.
- Update your software regularly.
- Identify scam attempts.
Use Strong Passwords
A strong password is one that includes random letters, numbers and characters. Be sure to mix in uppercase and lowercase letters. Avoid using the same password for different accounts. If one gets hacked, your other accounts that use the same password will be vulnerable.
Use Multi-Factor Authentication
Multi-factor authentication is when you get a notification with a randomly-generated security code. When this feature is activated, a code will be sent to a trusted device once you log in using your password. You will then need to enter the security code to proceed. This is a helpful feature that adds an extra level of security to you account. If someone tries to log in using your password, they won’t get far without the code. If you receive a code that you did not initiate, change your password immediately and inform the account customer support.
Update Software
Make sure your software is always up-to-date. These updates contain bug fixes, security features and patches that fix vulnerabilities with a device or app.
Identify Scams
Being able to identify scams is critical. If someone asks you for personal information, stop and think. It could be a scam. Never click on a link from an email you don’t trust. Check the sender’s email. Check for spelling mistakes. If you’re not sure, log into your account and contact customer support. There’s nothing wrong with reaching out to ask if something was sent to you legitimately or not.
