Designing Your Own Winter Olympic Games

February 6-22 is the 2026 Olympic Winter Games, taking place in Milano Cortina, Italy. The first Winter Olympic Games were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France. It recognized athletes from 16 countries, and featured sports like skiing, skating, bobsleigh, curling, and ice hockey. In this year’s Games, more than 3,500 athletes from 93 countries will compete in 16 sports.

The first Olympic Games were held in 776 BCE. It featured only 1 event: the stade race. This was a 200-meter footrace that is still performed today in the 200-meter sprint. The first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. It recognized 241 male athletes from 14 countries, competing in 9 sporting events. These include athletics (track and field), cycling (road and track), fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling.

Major Project: School Winter Olympics

Students work as a class to plan and hold a school Winter Olympic Games. Students divide into committees to look after different aspects of the school Olympics. Have students determine what the different committees will be and what each committee will be responsible for. Possible committees may include:

1. IOC Committee – responsible for overseeing the entire plans of the school Olympics.
2. Events Committee – responsible for planning the individual events of the school Olympics.
3. Ceremonies Committee – responsible for planning the opening and closing ceremonies.
4. Awards Committee – responsible for determining, designing and making the awards or medals for the school Olympics.
5. Canteen Committee – responsible for planning the canteen, ordering the supplies and arranging for the manpower.
6. Facilities Committee – responsible for ensuring the facilities and equipment are available for the sporting events.
