Group Collaboration for Read Across America Day

March 2 is National Read Across America Day. This year, we challenge participants to host activities that bring the whole community closer together. Your community can be your household, your friend group, your classroom, or even the whole school. Activities should encourage your group to read. Make reading fun! Below are some suggestions to get you started, along with some free downloadable worksheets.

Ask the Author
In this activity, as a group, pretend that you meet the author of the story. Get together and brainstorm four things that you want to ask the author. Write down the questions your group comes up with. Then, brainstorm again to find one thing you would like to tell the author as a group. Download this worksheet here.

Story Words Alphabet
In this activity, as a group, look in the story and find one word that begins with each letter. Write down the words next to the letter. As a group, you’ll have to agree on the words to use. Download this worksheet here.

Plot Chart
In this activity, as a group, detail the plot of the story by answering provided questions. As a group, you’ll have to agree on the answers. Some members may have different interpretations of the story and come up with answers that are different from the rest of the group. The key here is to collaborate with the rest of the members to come up with answers everyone can agree with. Download this worksheet here.
