November is National Novel Writing Month. That’s how it’s been since 1999. Unfortunately, the nonprofit event ended for this year (2025). It’s time to say goodbye to this 25-year event and celebrate the creativity and joy of writing it has sparked these many years. The goal for this year is to keep the spirit of this event alive by focusing on the skills needed to be a successful writer.
Being Clear: Making sure your message can easily be understood by the audience.
Being Brief: Using fewer words to get your message across.
Being Organized: Making sure your message is in a logical order.
Good Grammar: Using the correct spelling, punctuation and sentence structure.
Good Vocabulary: Using the right words to express your message.
Being Engaging: Having a writing style that is interesting, easy to follow, and keeps the audience’s attention.
How to Become a Better Writer
Practice makes perfect! The best and most consistent way to become a better writer is to practice. Write a little bit each day, even if it’s just a sentence. Getting into a rhythm of constant writing will only help build your writing skills. Read a variety of things. Try to read a bunch of different genres and styles. Get a sense of different author’s writing techniques. Get ideas and inspiration from others. Ask for others’ input. Get feedback from others. Learn from their criticisms to help improve your writing. Reread through your work. Look for mistakes and room to improve. Become familiar with proper grammar techniques. Incorporate this into your regular revision process. As part of this review process, try reading your work out loud. This can sometimes help you notice mistakes you might not otherwise find.
